Army Cavalry Units
Suggestions and tips on army air cavalry?
Ive been doing a lot of research lately and im pretty sure i want to be in 19D. If i have airborne in my contract will i be doing a lot of jumps, is airborne worth going into, or should i do air assault? Also, I know its mainly recon but what else do you do? Is it fun and worth choosing as an mos? Also, what is all this supper low life expectancy thing im reading about? I know its dangerous but i also know that they don’t want cav scouts dying so they take a lot precautions? How big are the units?
If you want to be Air Cavalry, then you’re better off with Air Assault. Not a whole lot of parachuting out of helicopters.
I spent 5 years in a Cavalry Regiment and we had an AirCav Squadron. They were equipped with both Cobras and OH-58 Kiowas, although they were upgrading to Apaches when I got out.
Their role in our order of battle was to scout out front to give the ground scouts at least a heads up that something was out there or too guard the flanks. They mostly accomplished this with the Kiowas. They had the large target radar/sight on top of the rotors. They would scoot up to a hill or some other suitable cover and slowly rise until that basketball size sight could see over the cover. They were virtually invisible to the enemy. They would then report back and the RCO would decide whether the Cobras could take it out what they saw or vector in his ground forces.
And those Kiowas were QUIET. I could almost crawl up behind them before I even heard the buggers.
