Cavalry Sabers

Can anyone help identify the history of this sword?

I found this old sword in my attic, I thought it might be a cavalry saber/cutlass but I can’t really identify it’s originality. Is there any military history person who can help me identify it by its marking’s and such. I figured the blade is iron because it’s rusting. I also have pictures too and the handle is engraved with the number “664″.

It’s an infantry “briquet” saber (but used by the artillery as well) used throughout Europe in the 19th century. I have one in my own collection that is from Belgium and made in the early 1840s, but they were used by most countries in Europe I believe to include Russia. There are literally thousands of these still around today due to them being copied so much. Without any markings on yours though other than the number (it could be a unit #) there isn’t a surefire way to tell where it comes from.

If it was French, there would be an engraving on the spine (the dull side) of the blade. On some there might be a tiny crown and/or date at the base of the blade nearest the handle.

The blade is steel and for something that is probably over 120 years old I’m surprised it doesn’t have more rust on it.
