Civil War Battle Sites

A great novel of the Civil War…?
Here’s the question.
A great novel of the Civil War was not written until long after the war had ended because :
a. the proper vehicle for such strong material, the realistic novel, had not yet been fully developed in the United States.
b. it was necessary for the intensity of the country’s emotions to subside before such a realistic novel would be accepted by the American public.
c. the writers who viewed the war firsthand lacked the skill to adequately describe what was really happening on the battlefields
d. no American writers of the period were willing to risk visiting the battle sites during the war.
I’m pretty sure it’s A or C. I’m leaning towards A though. I think when answer A says “vehicle” it’s speaking hypothetically, because it was such strong material that Americans might not be open to it and be turned away or something like that.
let me know what you think, thanks!
Well, I would agitate against a) because it refers to ‘long after’ the Civil War. the realistic novel was already established in American in the 1850s through William Dean Howells and by the end of the civil war was flourishing through Henry James, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton etc.
B) makes some sense in that the divides of the war were deep and it is possible that America would not have been accepted until it could be viewed with hindsight. c) makes little sense, as one of the accepted great novels of the war ‘Red Badge Of Courage’ was written by a bloke who wasn’t even born during the Civil War. D) is iffy as it doesn’t explain why writers were able to write about the war subsequently, not having visited the battle scenes. So out of them all B would be my choice.
