Civil War Bullet Identification

civil war bullet identification
Identification?

Hi! I am sorta like a wannabe archeoligis(i bet i didnt even spell it right) but i was digging in back yard. I fould a bullet! I was syked! But…….

The area around my home used to be forest so it could be a hunting bullet

Or more prefeberly, 3 streets away(1/4th of a mile) their is a swamp with the remains of a Civil War Fort!

So i dont know which it is. I know not everyone here is an expert on this stuff but could u lend me any help? Anything i can do to identify it?

FEATURES:

-extremley rusted
-on the top has written: SL 43
-Shaped like a cylinder
-bottom flatened and somewhat cut off(so u can tell its been fired)

Can anyone help?

OK

the SL43 probably refers to .303 US military ammo from 1943.

If you are interested in archaeology you could see if there are any “digs” in your area, try a local museum.
In terms of doing it your self, in fairness one of the most important parts of evidence is how and where something is found and what is associated with it. Which is why sites are all documented with alot of detail and layers removed one by one.

Good Luck !
