Number three is Reconstruction. I figured that one out.
My history teacher says that it wasn’t Thaddeus Stevens. And it’s not Charles Sumner either. I can’t think of anyone else. And it is spelled Revels apparently.
Jim Crow laws were laws that allowed racial segregation in public places.
The Radical Republicans were led by Thaddeus Stevens, a member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
The period from 1865 to 1877 that focused on reuniting the nation is known as Reconstruction.
Following the Civil War, many African Americans in the South made a living by participating in the sharecropping system.
After opposing Congress, Andrew Johnson became the first president to face impeachment proceedings.
In 1870, Hiram Revells became the first African American to serve in the U.S. Senate.
ADDITIONAL:
According to the “Biographical Directory of the United States Congress,” Thaddeus Stevens was Chairman of the Board of Managers, appointed by the House of Representatives to prosecute the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. Stevens was a Republican and he was from Pennsylvania, so it would be interesting to know who your teacher has in mind.
It was not Charles Sumner, because he was from Massachusetts.
You are correct. Revels is the correct spelling.
