Civil War Soldier Equipment

civil war soldier equipment
Where did union soldiers go for their equipment for the civil war?

I have to write a report about the civil war and i was just wondering what state, city, or what they went to to go get their uniforms, weapons from. i also wanted to know where they went to go sign up for it. Please can i have as many of those answers as possible ofr at least one.

In the beginning of the war state’s were responsible for outfitting the units raised. This is why the “kit” was so diverse. For example, the 2nd Wisconsin wore gray uniforms to the Battle of Bull Run (causing other Union troops wearing blue to think they were confederates and fire upon them. Also some units wore red pants in homage to French soldiers in Africa.
Weapons were as varied as well, but most after Bull Run were supplied with Springfield Model 1861 rifled-muskets. Although one unit was armed with ax handles until 1862! For more infromation read, “Small Arms at Gettysburg: Infantry and Cavalry Weapons in America’s Greatest Battle” By Joseph G. Bilby. FYI, I am a reenactor so if need anything more drop me a email.
