Civil War Soldier Uniform

Why did the Union wear light blue pants during the Civil War?
I know ALL about Confederate uniforms, but not as much about Union soldiers.
Why did they wear light blue pants?
At the start of the war, the standard uniform was a shell jacket, a kepi and pants. As the war went on, you vould wear your own hat or pants.
I dont understand why the standard uniform was different colors.
Actually not everyone wore the same color clothes. This is just what you see in all the painting to differentiate between the two sides. They just wore what they had.
