PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING, WRITTEN BY A FRIEND—-
THE TRUTH BEHIND OUR BELOVED CONFEDERATE FLAG.
It’s a shame that our beloved Confederate flag has come to be known as “racist” in this modern world, isn’t it? Now, many of us Southerners know what it truely stands for… I’d even go as far as to say there might even be a Yankee or two with the right idea, although they’d probably never admitt to it (comon, they can’t ALL be stupid… right?). So… for those of you who don’t know I’ll let ya in on a brief history of our flag and what it stands for.
First, let’s start before the war even began. In the 1850’s the Yankee government in Washington imposed heavy, unjust taxation over all imports to the Southern states. This effectively forced the Southern states to buy only from the North, givin the money hungry Yankees a monopoly on goods sold in the South. This ment that they could charge more for the same product. Now, at this time in America the Yankee states had a population of 3-1 compared to the South. So, in congress they had all the votes, making our wonderfull governmental system unfair and unjust (we Southerners couldn’t vote this tarrif out, ya see?). This, as one might expect, angered the good Southern people. They saw truely for the first time that their government cared little about them, just about their wallets.
Now, we find ourselves in 1854 with the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This act created two new territories in America, Kansas and Nebraska. Kansas was already on it’s way to becoming a state. Now, the trouble remained… was this to be a free state or a slave state? Well let me tell you why it mattered so much to the people who rushed into this state to gain control for one side or the other. The issue of slavery mattered nothing to either side really. It was a POLITICAL matter. Durring this time in our nation’s history the South was democratic (conservative) and the north republican (liberal). Before I go any further, yes I do realize those parties are not that way today, a change came about slowly after the war and today those parties have reversed their stances. Anyways, if a state was slave holding then it would become a democratic state and thus give the democrats more representatives in Congress. Likewise if a state was free and would be republican. Now… why does this matter some of you folk might be askin? Well… the Yankees loved money, I need not tell you that, and as long as they controlled congress they could continue to squeeze the Southern people for all they could get. So, they pressed to discontinue the expansion of slavery into other states thus insuring themselves a dominant place in congress.
Are we starting to see a patern here? Boy them Yanks sure do love their money don’t they? Probably remind you folks of some fellers ya’ll know. Anyway, back to my story here.
Next came the election of 1860. There were four candidates on the ballot. The democratic party had split into two, creating the Northern democrats with Stephen A. Douglas for president, and the Southern democrats with John C. Breckinridge for president. Abraham Lincoln was on the republican ticket, and on the Constitutional Union ticket there was a feller named John Bell. Now of course we all know who won, but do ya know why it angered the South so badly? It wasn’t because Lincoln was an stanch abolishionist, he wanted to keep slavery intact in the South and merely slow it’s advancement to other states. Got another guess? You haven’t paid much attention if yer still guessing. For those of you that have it, I thank you. Yes, he was republican! And the South had been through over a decade of oppression already by the republican government in Washington. The last thing they needed was more republican power to keep them down! For many folks… this was the last straw. (For those of you who ask “well why didn’t the South just vote for someone else then and get the president they wanted?”… they did. I told you the ratio was 3-1… and Lincoln didn’t even show up on the ballot in 10 of the Southern states. The Yanks just had so dang many people (givin them so dang many votes) that they might as well not even have bothered passin out ballots to the Southerners. Lot of good it did us huh?)
So here we are at last. Lincoln’s the president, sworn into office in early 1861. Well now the Southerns have had it. The last seed of their distruction has been sewn in their eyes. It’s time to do something about it and stand up for their rights as Americans! They attempted to talk things over with congress, but of course they wouldn’t listen. They were now in the ulitmate seat of power, why would they wanna listen to some Southerners? Well then it was done. South Carolina stood up and said they’d had enough. They conviened legislation and held a meeting. The great state of South Carolina seceded from the Union. Following suit over the course of more than half a year she was followed by another 10 of her Southern sisters. Missouri and Kentucky eventually voted for secession due to Nothern brutality, but were unable to officially join because of having their state legislatures overrun by the Yankee army. They were occupied for the majority of the war by their enemy, but their boys and the boys from the other 11 Southern states ran off to war anyway. They fought for their rights, they fought to protect their homes and families that were being invaded so that those money hungry Yanks could keep their precious Southland that yeilded so much revenue for them. The Yankee government in Washington put to death hundreds of thousands of good Southern men at the end of a gunbarrel to make themselves rich.
And so now you might ask, in light of all this, how did the war for Southern Independence ever get to be labeled a war over slavery? Well I’m glad to share if anyone wants to know. Here we go! In late 1862 the North had gone from being at the brink of victory in the spring, to having the war taken to Northern soil for the first time since it’s start. Now one would wonder how you could keep an army together that had seen so much loss in such a short amount of time. Well… the answer is really quite simple. We must look at the political situation at that time. Britain and France were looking to come into the war, both on the Confederate’s side, to aid in creating the new Confederate nation. But Lincoln knew he couldn’t allow this to happen. He needed something to stop it all. He needed a miracle. Well… suddenly he knew what to do. He waited until they had achieved a victory, albeit a questionable one, then he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. What do you know about this incredible document? I’ll bet in school you learned that Lincoln knew he had to free the slaves and make things right with the world! Well let me tell you, he did it to accomplish three things. 1.) He assumed that if he freed all the slaves in the South that they would rise up and their masters would have to go tend to them, effectively dissolving the armies of the Confederacy. (Didn’t happen) 2.) He knew that if he could make this seem like a moral issue over slavery, that Britian and France wouldn’t intervene because they couldn’t politically associate themselves with an “unmoral government”. 3.) Lincoln’s armies were in peril. Desertions were at an all-time high. If he didn’t have something to rally his country with, then they were sure to lose the war. But what better to inspire your country than to tell them they are crusaders on a moral mission out to set other men free?! Wow… that sounds good doesn’t it? And so, the war became a mission to free the enslaved negro in the South…. or so it would seem. Why is it that the few slave holding states that didn’t secede still got to keep their slaves until after the war? Could it be because it wasn’t about freeing the slaves at all, but merely an attempt to refuel the war effort? Hmm… interesting… all good things to think about. Them Yanks were as crafty and hypocritic then as they are now. They never cared about anyone but themselves.
So as I’m sure anyone now can plainly see… we Southerners are proud, damn proud, to display that flag that Yankees and African Americans call “racist”. It stands for all that we Americans hold so dear to our hearts. Freedom from tyranny, from oppression. It stands for state’s rights. It stands for individual rights. It stands for self-determination. It stands for the struggle we made trying to uphold our rights as citizens of this nation. And, it stands as a symbol of remberance for those brave men that fought under that starry banner, fought for what they believed in so dearly that they were willing to risk their lives for it.
So I hope that every Yankee and African American who reads this will be more cautious now when calling that flag or even us Southerners racist. It offends me greatly to be called one, and offends me even more so for my flag to be called a symbol of such!
And what of the slaves, you might ask? Well let me tell you a little about them as well. Europeans first got them in Africa from other blacks who traded them to us. Then, the were brought to America. They ALL came through nothern ports. Why? Because the Yanks owned all the shipping companies and wanted the profits! Of course!! So, we had slavery as an institution in America… nationwide. North and South. But soon, the Northerners realized they shouldn’t have their slaves. But… can you guess why? I wonder… could it be because they had a sudden attack of morals? Nah… good ole Yanks… it’s because of a money issue. They had a 3-1 ratio, remember? Keep that number, it’s important. They had no reason for slaves with such a number of people. The slaves were taking jobs the whites could fill, so in a sense the blacks were taking money away from white folk! Well now that just didn’t suit! So what did they do? They abolished slavery in the North, but told folks that owned slaves they were still considered their property and they had until their present slaves’ life was over to sell them to the South. Well now, the South had much fewer people and we neede the help. You’ve got to remember that back then nobody knew better, so slavery was accepted. So, we bought them from the Yankees and we were glad to have them. By the mid-nineteenth century we were used to having them around working in the fields. It wasn’t at all odd to see a white person walking down the street with a black person talking to each other. Not in the South anyway… but as one Yankee newspaper man from Maine was qouted saying, “My God they (white folk and black folk) just walk around talking to each other in the streets… and in public! What a disgrace!” Because, you see, in the North the majority of Yankee folk couldn’t stand the idea of even being seen in public with a black person (who was considered to be a second class citizen). So… that said, who were bigger racists? The people of the South who lived each day with black people and didn’t mind it? Or the Northern Yankees who couldn’t stand the site of ‘em? (Lincoln himself, the “Great Emancipator”, was a racist too I might add. In 1858 he gave a speech in Illinios claming that “Negros were the scurge of the Earth. They all ought to be sent back to the lands from which they came”. Later, he became part of a movement to send them back to Africa… but he was killed before it could ever happen.)
Wow… some stuff you never saw in a school textbook huh?! Amazing how different the truth is from what you are taught. I reckon that’s one of the spoils of victory… re-writing things with a new spin on it. Afterall, nobody likes to be called a greedy, uncaring liar… do they? Nope. Amercia will be forever remembered as a glorious nation that cared for it’s people and would stop at nothing to preserve their freedom and liberties. And the Confederacy will always be remembered as the treasonous fellows who hated their country and hated black men. My oh my… such a sad thing.
I’d like to thank each and every one of you who actually read all this. I know I stated in the begining that I would be brief, and compared to living over a decade that my story spanned, I’d say I didn’t let you down. I’d like to close this by saying first that I am a student of the war for more than half my life now. I have read many, many books, articles, and documents on the subject and spent countless hours researching. I have found that is the only way to find the truth. I’d also like to say that if you’d like to learn more… then go read a book, please? Educate yerselves further! There’s nothing worse than thinking you know it all when in reality knowing little or nothing. Only wish I could get them darn Yankees to understand that.
