~Insofar as the military victory is concerned, the USA won. The Victors were called the USA. The USA consisted of the states from New England, the North, the Mid-west, the West and the Pacific coast, the Mid-Atlantic States and the so-called ‘border states’ that did not pass Ordinances of Secession. Eventually, those counties which seceded from Virginia and were illegally and unconstitutionally admitted into the USA as the separate state of West Virginia also became part of the USA during the war.

The Confederate States of America lost. The CSA consisted of the eleven states who did pass, by democratic process – first through the elected representatives of the people, then at the polls by popular vote by the people who were legally entitled to vote – the Ordinances of Secession. There was no constitutional prohibition against secession and that the New England states acknowledged that secession was a right reserved to the states under the US Constitution was made clear by those states when they threatened to secede in 1803 and again in 1812/14.

Uniforms varied. During the early years of the war, uniforms for each side were provided by the national governments and by state governments (and even by city, town and county governments and by civilian organizations). Uniforms also varied by service branch and by the duties of the troops within the services. USA uniforms were primarily, but not exclusively, dark blue. CSA uniform tunics or jackets were primarily butternut, brown and gray (of various shades), generally with blue trousers. Shirt colors varied on both sides, as did hats and other accessories. Other colors were used by both nations and individual colors and uniforms were sometimes adopted by individual units. Each side, by rules and regulations, attempted to standardize uniforms but by war’s end, neither had completely succeeded in that task. The uniforms used by both sides, and especially by the USA resulted in numerous deaths. USA uniforms were made of wool, with no thought given to the comfort of the troops in southern climates. Many soldiers died from heat stroke during battle and/or maneuvers as a direct result of the uniforms they were required to wear.

There are any number of sites you can visit to see what the various uniforms looked like, although the authentic photographs of original uniforms are in black and white. To find the many variations of uniforms, it would help if you searched the individual units in which you are interested.

In the final analysis, both sides won the war. The CSA states were readmitted to the union and the resulting whole became a much more viable nation (financially, economically, industrially, militarily, intellectually, etc.) than the sum of the parts and neither the CSA nor USA could have achieved alone that which has been accomplished by the combination of the two.
