What did union soldiers think about the end of the civil war?
& what about southern citizens? How did they react to the result of the American Civil War?

When Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox C.H. in 1865, upon Lee leaving the residence in which they met, the yard full of Federal soldiers rose and stood at attention out of deference for him. Lee quietly mounted his horse and quietly left the yard and headed for his headquarters. He had a terrible duty to perform. Grant saluted Lee as he departed and Lee returned the salute. After the Confederate chief left, the Federals broke out in a wildly enthusiastic display of celebration. Grant ordered them to be quiet and cease their celebration as the” Confederate forces are our countrymen once again and are suffering deprivations, We will not celebrate their misfortune”.
As for the feeling of Southern civilians….those who didn’t starve, freeze, weren’t killed outright by federal soldiers or deserters or die of diseases that could have been cured by medicines that they couldn’t get due to a federal blockade were glad the war was over but dreading the reconstruction policies of the north.
