First Cavalry Division

1st Cavalry Division???????

Just wondering, what is the first cavalry division, like is it all cavalry scouts and armor? i’m just wondering because i’ve heard it has infantry also. it confuses me because i thought cavalry would mean there are all cavalry scouts and armor in it, i’ve also heard that infantry divisions have calvary brigades/armor in them, how does this work, could someone explain the structure of the various divisions in the army and how some can have calvary and infantry in them, also, do cavalry scouts actually fight? like do they ever go in with the main fighting force? are they the same as the 1st calvary? because i’ve seen the first cavalry’s history, and it definitely looks like theyve been the spearhead of many attacks on various accounts, could someone just clear this up for me? thanks

I am a Cavalry Scout in 1st Cavalry Division. Let me see if I can break down your question into parts.

1- The 1st Cavalry Division is a rapidly deployable “heavy armored” division. That means that they use heavy armor vehicles like the Abrams tanks and the Bradly Fighting Vehicles.

2- It is not all scouts, it is a mixture of all the combat MOS’s and support. In a brigade from the 1st Cav, it will usually have one squadron of scouts, a battalion of armor (tanks), a battalion of infantry, a battalion of field artillery, and has mps and other support MOS’s. In the scout squadron, there are even a few infantry guys that are mortarmen that do indirect fire for the squadron.

3- Infantry divisions also most of the time has scout squadrons assigned to thier brigades. It all depends on the division and how they are made up. I used to be part of 4th Infantry Divsion as a scout, and it was made up just like we are in 1st Cav. Our brigade had a scout squadron, battalion of infantry, and so on. Just the same as 1st Cav.

4- How this would work. I basically just broke it down for you..lol Some larger infantry units will have a few scouts attached to each company or to each battallion. They use the scouts for recon. They send the scouts ahead of the line, to get information about the enemy behind enemy lines so that the higher ups know what kind of force they are dealing with. i.e. if the enemy has armor, they know to bring tanks and stuff with the assault.

5- YES, scouts actually fight…lol Scouts are trained in more of an array of fighting than the infantry. The reason behind that is because we are sent in before infantry or armor to gather intel on the enemy. We are sent out there all alone to get the info, or fight for the info. In this war that we have going on, we are doing teh same thign as the infantry is doing like combat patrols and raids and all that. Scout was actually an infantry MOS several years ago.

6- Normally, they would not be with the main fighting force because they would already be forward of the main fighting force with eyes on the enemy. A lot of the time, since time is a big issue, since the scouts are already there and they are a pretty good fighting force, they will get the order go ahead and engage the enemy even without the main fighting force there.

7- The 1st Cav Division is just a regular heavy armored division that got its name from waaay back in the old cavalry days. It has kept the name, but no it is not just scouts anymore. They have been the spearhead of many attacks over our history with wars.

A funny thing about beign a scout, is that infantry or tankers will try to insult us by saying “when in doubt, shoot a scout”. That saying actually was a compliment. The whole thing is about knowing where the enemy is. Basically what the original saying was for was, when in doubt (where the enemy is) shoot a scout. Because the scout would be there right under the enemy’s noses so you are bound to hit the enemy..lol
