Household Cavalry Regiment

How can I find the details of how an ancestor died in the Second World War?
My Great Uncle died on 5th March 1944 and was in the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment. As I am told, he would have been on the Turko-Syrian border or moving towards Alexandria to travel to Italy. As he is buried in the Alexandria (Hadra) War Cemetery, I want to find out what happened to him as he obviously didn’t make it to Italy. Is there any way I can find out if he died in battle or had an accident etc?
Try contacting his Regiment, surely they keep records. Or what about MOD section on Friends Reunited. Good Luck.
My answer looks pretty poor now compared to the other 2 but I did my best, hope you find what you need.
