North vs. South: The Economic Balance
Directions :It is May 1861, and the Civil War has just begun. You have the task of considering the economic advantages and disadvantages of each side, with the goal of helping you determine which overall side (North or South) is likely to win. Using the interactive map (http://www.teachingamericanhistory.org/neh/interactives/civilwar/lesson1/ ) and the North-South Comparison Chart (http://www.gilderlehrman.org/teachers/module10/mod_tools.html ; click on North-South Comparison Chart to open window), complete the following chart. For each category, indicate which side—North or South—seemed to possess the advantage, and explain why. Use specific evidence from the map and chart to back up your claims.

Manufacturing
Agricultural (Food) Production
Cotton Production
Railroads
Slaves
Immigrants
I dot think you really need to go too far into research to understand this.
The Union, being a progressive industrial land that welcomed immigration even if they were not that good at dealing with it had the advantages in Wealth, Manufacturing, Railroad and Immigrants. Wealth because they could produce more merchandise than the South and actually sell it abroad because they had a good navy. Manufacturing is simple, they were an Industrial society. Railroad was easier for the North to replace, having better steel works, and lay that the south (see Sherman and the Atlanta Campaign for more detail) and the Union actually welcomed immigration while the South did not.
The South had the advantage in Cotton production and Slaves as they were the main producer of Cotton in the World Prior to the war and it actually went to rot during the War and they were the side that had the bulk of slaves during the war.
Agricultural food production was probably a bit more even but the Union probably had the edge, what with their food suppliers being far away from the War and the Confederacy’s food supplies being in the battle ground.
