Modern Cavalry

modern tank tactics????

so since horses are obselete in warefare, well maybe combat they are, anyways tanks are considered the new cavalry correct? if so when horses were used it was unwise to send them in unsupported and unsugested to send infantry in unsupported, my question is with all the weaponary available, do infantry still need “modern calvary tank” support to protect them or are they fine on there on? vice versa for tanks, can they just roll in and expect to be succesful or do they need infantry to cover them?
im going ot be testing tank tactics effectively in the new battlefeild game (looks like it gives realistic senaries but thats beside the point)
also is it wise for a tank sqaudren to concentrate on a specific flank or just all out charge another tank sqaudron?

Armour units are classified as Armoured Cavalry.

Like Cavalry of old, they are wonderful for TAKING enemy held territory. That being said, they are horrible for HOLDING captured territory. For that, you need the Grunts.

You are correct that Armour protects Infantry, and Infantry protects Armour…and yes…partly BECAUSE of the modern tech, tactics and equipment, Infantry STILL needs back-up and support from Armoured Units. An RPG at close range may be a threat to armour, but only armour can “guarantee” a kill. (Mind you, in the case of an M1 Abrams, a shoulder fired Heat Seeking Missile can all but guarantee a mobility kill if fired from the rear…the 1200degree heat plume from the jet turbine sees to that…)

For your game, yes…as long as the armour is not exceeding it’s operational envelope fuel wise, it can do a LOT of damage without support, but at the same time, it is vulnerable to experienced arty crews and appropriately armed infantry…and in the real world, the infantry is transported in a US built Bradley (US & Canadian forces, although the CF is also using other IFVs, as the Bradley is crippled by the fact that a single .50 cal round will penetrate the REAR armour propmtly after penetrating the FRONT armour. Unlike the US, most nations that *do* have the Bradley in it’s T.O.E. – because of this vulnerability, drop the infantry off 2-3 km from the battle, not on the line, like the US does…

As for frontal vs flank assaults…that depends on the tanks and terrain. If a tank is “hull down”, it’s easier, safer, and more efficient to attack from the flank or rear, as the tank is immobile, and has it’s heaviest armour pointing into the obstacle it is situated behind… In a mobile battle, even the best gun can have difficulty piercing armour from the front, given it’s slope, materials, and presence of reactive armour. Most kill shots on tanks are from the side, top, and rear, or into the tread. Even without artillery, an immobile tank is a soon to be dead tank…especially if you can kill the crew when they dismount to fix the tread!

The perfect Mixed Arms regiment has a mix of Armour, Infantry, Artillery, and Air…
