Results Of The Civil War

How did the role of the federal government change as a result of the Civil War?
I need just a few examples through race relations, economic development and westward expansion.
With the advent of the Civil War the federal Government began to initiate acts which were extra-constitutional. This included such things as the invasion of the Confederacy which was a foreign country. The suspension of habeas corpus, the attacking of the civilians (noncombatants) of the Confederacy (i.e., Sherman’s March to the sea with orders from Lincoln to attack civilians), the removal of elected legislatures in the States of the former Confederacy (specifically those who rejected the 14th Amendment) and replacing them with military picked replacements (no such power exists in the Constitution), the ending of State Legislature nullifying of federal acts, and many other such extra-constitutional acts.
Most significantly, by applying the 14th Amendment (although it never reached constitutional requirements for ratification) which provided a foundation for the federal government to apply the articles of the Bill of Rights to the States. The Founders specifically designed the first eight articles of the Bill of Rights to exclude the federal government (and only the federal government) from doing specific acts.
In other words, the Constitution written by the Founders was torn asunder and replaced with a new interpretation which placed the federal government in sovereign power over the States, something the Founders never wanted.
