Sword Restoration

1863 Light calvery sword Q’s?

i obtained a 1863 Light Calvary sword from my grandfather one year.

I believe it to be M-1862 Light Cavalry Saber from the AMES manufacture. As it looks pretty much the same. http://www.amessword.com/featured.php

its is in pretty good condition. I can clearly read U.S, A.D.K, 1863 on the sword. On the reverse side i can read AMES- (some faint word), Chicopee, MASS.

The sheath is in good conditions with a dent the size of a musket ball and some rust at the top of it.

Also, The wire is still on the leather handle. And the blade is still in what a assume to be good condition, but it is not sharp (except for the tip)

Over the years being in generations it has some paint speckles on it that come off easily with a fingernail scratch.

Over all, what might be the value of this sword?

Also, would it be in my best interest to get it insured?

And would restoration be ok?

I can’t give you tell you how much it is worth, but don’t try to restore it. That will lower the selling value considerably! The link I’ve provided is to the U.S. Cavalry Association’s web site, why don’t you email them and see if they can provide any assistance to you.
