Why do people say China has a bad military record?
Sure they lost some wars and got invaded but who hasn’t? The wars which they lost were:Opium wars,Boxer Rebellion,Sino French war and First Sino-Japanese war.Thats 5 wars (There were 2 Opium wars) out of their many victories.The other were stalemate.I didn’t count in Manchu invasions or Mongolia invasions because Manchu is a official Chinese ethnic minority and Mongolia invaded China when it was split into several kingdoms.So why do people say China has a poor military record? Isn’t there a reason for them being so big? Only lost 5 wars out of their 10,000 year reign?
I haven’t heard anybody making that statement, ever. The fact China remained to date for 5000 years (not 10,000, half of that) of strife and history showed its mass heritage and will to stay together.
However I must agree Chinese casualties in warfare far out-strips its enemies, since the main Chinese strategy is to wear the enemy to unendurable limits with waves upon waves of soldiers until the opponent quits. The war is won, but the lives are lost forever. Vietnam and Korea are perfect examples.
And China didn’t loose just 5 wars, throughout history when China was divided many bordering nations claimed the chance to invade China, you’re putting too much emphasis on modern history. You also didn’t count in the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Nationalists or Communists may claim they drove the Japanese out, but it was still largely due to America’s island-hopping that spread the Japanese army thin, and the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan that forced Japan to unconditionally surrender.
